Gum Disease
Gum disease is a common dental problem that if not addressed may result in tooth loss. What is gum disease ? Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the tissues and bones surrounding and supporting the teeth. There are two common types of gum disease :
Gingivitis is the inflammation of gum tissue. Plaque or tarter buildups along the gumline can irritate the guns and cause swelling at first but then lead to bleeding. Blood on the toothbrush or dental floss while brushing or flossing is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis. Because this type of gum disease does not cause pain, many people refrain from getting treatment. Thankfully gingivitis is preventable and reversible through regular brushing and flossing.
Periodontitis develops if gum disease progresses and is not addressed. The gums pull away from the teeth, leaving deep pockets inviting bacteria to grow and destroy the bone and structures supporting the teeth. Unlike gingivitis this type of gum disease is irreversible and can be excruciatingly painful during the later stages. Symptoms include bad breath, bleeding or receding gums and itchy sensations.
What causes gum disease ? Gum disease is caused when plaque produced by your mouth is not regularly removed. With time this bacteria-containing plaque hardens into a substance called tartar that has to be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist. You are more likely to get gum disease if you smoke, spit tobacco, do not clean your teeth well or have gum disease in your family.
In order to diagnose gum disease , our dentists and dental hygienists here at Mona Lisa Smiles can take X-rays of your teeth to look for bone damage and other problems. To treat gum disease that has advanced to periodontitis we can perform a process known as root planning and scaling which will clean your teeth. Severe cases of gum disease may require surgery.
